Brain Gym: The "Thumb & Pinky" Exercise to Boost Senior Memory
A Simple Daily Workout for a Sharper Mind
Hello to all our seniors and caregivers! Today, the Elderly Development Team at Ramathibodi Hospital, led by Khun Pui (Music Therapist) and Nurse Moo, brings you a fantastic brain exercise designed specifically for older adults.
Why is Brain Training Important?
Just like our muscles, our brains need a daily workout. Consistent brain training is crucial for maintaining Memory and Concentration.
Most importantly, this specific exercise helps synchronize the Left and Right hemispheres of the brain, training them to work together efficiently.
How to Do the "Thumb & Pinky" Challenge
This exercise is simple, fun, and can be done anywhere. Follow these steps:
Position: Raise both hands to eye level (keep them high enough so you can see your fingers clearly).
Start Position:
Right Hand: Make a fist and extend only your Thumb (like a "Good job" sign).
Left Hand: Make a fist and extend only your Pinky finger.
The Switch: Now, swap them!
Tuck in your Right Thumb and extend your Right Pinky.
Tuck in your Left Pinky and extend your Left Thumb.
The Rhythm: Start slowly to let your brain and hands learn the pattern. Once you get the hang of it, gradually increase your speed. There is no need to rush—focus on accuracy first!
Daily Practice Goal
You don't need to spend hours on this. Just 1 to 10 repetitions a day is enough to keep your brain alert and active.
Don't forget to practice every day! And if you master the move, feel free to record a video and share your progress with us—we’d love to see it!
